What Lies Beneath (2000) – Blu-ray Disc Review
“He was the perfect husband… until his secret wouldn’t stay buried.”
Format: Blu-ray (from 4K restoration) | ️ Release Date: May 6, 2025
️ Distributor: Scream Factory | ⏱️ Runtime: 130 minutes | Rated PG-13
Genres: Supernatural • Psychological Thriller • Mystery • Horror
️ 1080p Video – 4.5/5
This Blu-ray uses the same 4K restoration as the UHD disc, downscaled to 1080p. The result is a very strong HD presentation—likely the best the film has ever looked on Blu-ray.
The cinematography by Don Burgess shines with moody tones and finely resolved grain. Color grading is noticeably more natural and consistent than past editions, and skin tones look much more lifelike. Shadow detail is strong, and the frequent low-light interior scenes hold up very well, with minimal crush and no artifacting.
If you don’t have 4K capability, this Blu-ray is still a worthy visual upgrade over the older Paramount release.
Aspect Ratio: 2.39:1
Disc Type: BD-50
Region: A (locked)
Audio – 3.5/5
You get two English tracks:
- DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (4130 kbps, 24-bit)
- DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (1560 kbps, 24-bit)
The 5.1 track is fairly subdued, with a front-heavy mix and modest rear channel activity. Surrounds pick up during storm sequences and during Alan Silvestri’s Herrmann-inspired score, but action is limited. Some dialog, especially in whispery or suspenseful scenes, requires boosting the volume a few notches.
The 2.0 stereo mix is clean and balanced, closely resembling the film’s original theatrical audio and may actually offer better vocal clarity depending on your setup.
Subtitles: English SDH (some minor omissions and typos)
Special Features – 4.0/5
All features are housed on the Blu-ray disc. Scream Factory carries over archival supplements and adds a fantastic new 80-minute documentary:
- ️ Audio Commentary with director Robert Zemeckis and producers Steve Starkey & Jack Rapke – Insightful but a bit sparse.
- ️ NEW: “You Know: Uncovering What Lies Beneath” (1h 22m) – A deep-dive, full-length doc with interviews from Zemeckis, Silvestri, Legato, Pfeiffer, and more. Easily one of Scream Factory’s best retrospectives.
- “Constructing the Perfect Thriller” (15 min, archival) – A 2000 promo featurette blending behind-the-scenes content and a tribute to Zemeckis’ career.
- ️ Theatrical Trailer (2.5 min) – Caution: contains major spoilers.
Final Verdict – Blu-ray Disc Score: 4.0/5
✅ VIDEO: Major step up from earlier Blu-rays
✅ AUDIO: Solid, but not spectacular
✅ EXTRAS: Loaded with new and archival content
⚠️ LIMITATION: Region A locked
Recommended for fans of ghost stories, Zemeckis completists, or anyone building a suspense collection. While the 4K disc is the definitive version, this Blu-ray holds its own thanks to an excellent transfer and robust extras package.
