Movie

5.0/5

Ken Russell’s fever-dream adaptation of The Who’s legendary rock opera explodes off the screen in a psychedelic blast of music, surreal visuals, and chaotic energy. From the messianic journey of Tommy to Ann-Margret’s unforgettable performance (and baked beans scene ), this is pure sensory overload — and that’s exactly the point.

Tommy remains one of the wildest and most iconic rock musicals ever committed to film, and its sheer commitment to outrageousness makes it unforgettable.

Video Quality (4K UHD)

4.5/5

Sourced from a new 4K scan of the original 35mm negative and interpositive, Tommy looks better than ever!
Grain is natural and cinematic. Colors pop vibrantly, especially the primaries (reds, yellows, blues) that dominate the film’s visual style. Skin textures, sets, and costumes are sharply defined. HDR and Dolby Vision carefully enhance the psychedelic lighting and musical sequences without overwhelming the image.

This is a huge upgrade over previous Blu-rays. Minor source-related softness persists in a few effects shots, but it’s faithful to the original photography.

Audio Quality

5.0/5

The Quintaphonic 5.0 DTS-HD MA track is the default and replicates the original roadshow experience!
Soundstage is wild and immersive — songs swirl around you with punchy bass, crisp vocals, roaring synths, and smashing guitars.

Dialogue is clear when it needs to be, but the real star is The Who’s sprawling soundscape.
If you want a slightly more “modern” balance, there’s a straight 5.1 DTS-HD MA mix and a 2.0 stereo mix available too.
This is demo-quality audio for rock musicals!

✍️ Overall Recommendation

4.0/5 – Recommended!

Tommy isn’t for everyone — it’s loud, brash, weird, and totally over the top. But that’s exactly what makes it a cult classic.

This 4K UHD release delivers the movie in spectacular form with a beautiful new transfer, glorious original sound, and no unnecessary tinkering. If you love The Who, Ken Russell’s mad genius, or cinematic experiments that go all in, this is a must-own. ️
