Timecop (1994) – 4K Ultra HD Disc Review
Release Date: April 29, 2025 | Distributor: Shout! Factory
Edition: 4K UHD
Runtime: 98 minutes | Rated: R
Genres: Action | Thriller | Martial Arts | Sci-Fi | Comic Book

Video Quality – 4.0/5

Presented in native 4K (2160p) with Dolby Vision and HDR10, Timecop sees a strong visual restoration sourced from the original 35mm camera negative. The image is appropriately dark, as much of the film takes place in dim interiors or nighttime sequences, but the HDR pass brings out impressive highlights in explosions, time travel sequences, and neon-lit futuristic sets.

Color density and contrast are far superior to Warner Bros.’ older Blu-ray transfer. Warm skin tones and atmospheric lighting give the film a natural texture. Grain is present and film-like throughout. Minor imperfections and occasional specks remain but do not detract from the experience. This is easily the best the film has ever looked on home video—even if not a massive leap from HD, it’s a noticeable step up in detail and dynamic range.

Bitrate: ~81 Mbps
Aspect Ratio: 2.35:1 (original 2.39:1)
HDR Format: Dolby Vision / HDR10

Audio Quality – 3.5/5

Two tracks are provided:

  • DTS-HD MA 5.1 (24-bit)
  • DTS-HD MA 2.0 Stereo (24-bit)

The 5.1 surround mix is a disappointment—it lacks punch and discrete rear channel activity. You’ll need to crank up your volume to catch nuances, and it sounds more like a compressed Dolby Digital DVD mix than true lossless HD audio. Compared to the 2010 Warner Bros. 5.1 mix, Scream’s new version feels restrained and underwhelming.

On the other hand, the 2.0 stereo track is the real winner. It delivers clean dialogue, strong bass, and immersive surround bleed through matrixed channels. Composer Mark Isham’s score shines here, especially the steel drum-infused main theme. If you’re a purist or an audiophile, the 2.0 is the way to go.

Best Practice: Watch with the DTS-HD MA 2.0 enabled.
Subtitles: English SDH
5.1 rating: 2.0/5 | 2.0 rating: 4.5/5 | Average: 3.5/5

Special Features – 0/5

❌ Unfortunately, there are no bonus features on either the 4K or Blu-ray disc. This is a major missed opportunity, especially considering the cult following and fascinating production history. No commentary, no interviews, no archival material—not even a trailer.

Playback:

  • 4K UHD: Region Free

What You Get

  • 1x 4K UHD Disc (BD-66)

Overall – 3.0/5

While the video transfer is solid and the 2.0 stereo mix is excellent, the lack of extras and weak 5.1 track keep Timecop from reaching full potential on 4K. Fans of the film will appreciate the visual clarity and color depth of this new edition, but audio purists may want to hold onto the older Warner Bros. Blu-ray for its superior 5.1 mix.

Recommended with Caveats. If you’re a fan of Van Damme or ’90s sci-fi action, this is the best version of Timecop yet—just don’t expect an immersive soundscape or bonus content.
