Timecop (1994) – Blu-ray Disc Review
Release Date: April 29, 2025 | Distributor: Shout! Factory
Edition: Blu-ray from 4K Restoration (Included in 4K UHD Combo Pack)
Runtime: 98 minutes | Rated: R
Genres: Action | Thriller | Martial Arts | Sci-Fi | Comic Book

Video Quality – 4.0/5

Sourced from the same 4K restoration as the UHD disc, the 1080p Blu-ray transfer is a notable improvement over Warner Bros.’ earlier Blu-ray release. Encoded at a high average bitrate (~35 Mbps) on a dedicated BD-50, this version features much stronger contrast, deeper blacks, and more accurate color grading.

Details are crisp for a 1080p image—textures, facial features, and background elements appear more vivid and defined than ever before on Blu-ray. While not quite as nuanced as the Dolby Vision-enhanced 4K presentation, the new Blu-ray is the best HD version of the film to date, easily besting the compressed double-feature disc from 2010.

Aspect Ratio: 2.35:1
Source: 4K remaster scanned from original camera negative

Audio Quality – 3.5/5

The Blu-ray features:

  • DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (24-bit)
  • DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo (24-bit)

While the 5.1 track included on this disc is new from Shout! Factory, it unfortunately lacks the punch and spatial clarity found in Warner Bros.’ earlier 5.1 track. Effects and rear speaker usage are minimal, making this track feel flat and subdued during action sequences.

Thankfully, the 2.0 Stereo track is outstanding. It delivers clear dialogue, strong bass, and pleasant surround matrixing when played through a compatible system. Composer Mark Isham’s synth and percussion-driven score sounds especially engaging in this mix. For the best experience, opt for the 2.0.

Subtitles: English SDH
5.1 rating: 2.0/5 | 2.0 rating: 4.5/5 | Overall audio score: 3.5/5

Special Features – 0/5

❌ There are no special features on the Blu-ray. This disc focuses solely on presenting the film in the best possible visual quality. Even a trailer or commentary would have added value here, but sadly, none are included.

Overall Blu-ray Score – 3.5/5

Shout! Factory’s new Blu-ray presentation of Timecop is a significant step up from the older Warner Bros. disc in terms of picture quality, thanks to its 4K restoration source. The 2.0 audio mix is also a standout, but the lack of extras and the underwhelming 5.1 surround keep it from being a top-tier release.

Recommendation: If you’re not ready to upgrade to 4K but want the best-looking Blu-ray of Timecop to date, this disc is worth owning. For full value, the 4K combo pack remains the best overall option.
