The Hunt (2020)

The Hunt – Blu-ray Disc Review (Shout! Factory, 2025)
Format: Blu-ray (included in the 4K combo)
Release Date: April 22, 2025
️ Runtime: 89 minutes
️ Genres: Horror | Dark Humor | Thriller | Comedy | Action
Rating: R

️ Video – 4.0/5

  • Codec: MPEG-4 AVC
  • Resolution: 1080p
  • Aspect Ratio: 2.39:1

The standard Blu-ray presentation of The Hunt is very good — sharp, well-defined, and colorful, though not quite as nuanced as the 4K counterpart. Daytime sequences look crisp and relatively detailed, especially in facial closeups and environmental textures like foliage and dirt. The SDR grading does a fine job with contrast, but lacks the expanded range and brilliance of the Dolby Vision seen on the 4K disc. Some of the darker scenes feel slightly flatter and murkier by comparison, with minor black crush in certain shadow-heavy moments. Colors are still bold and appealing, with blood splatters, neon signage, and forest greenery retaining their punch. The fine grain layer is intact, lending the image a pleasing cinematic texture. Compression artifacts are minimal, with smooth gradients and clean movement. Overall, this is a strong 1080p presentation, but if you have a 4K setup, the UHD disc is the one you’ll want to watch.

Audio – 4.5/5

  • Audio Tracks:
    • English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
    • English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0
  • Subtitles: English SDH

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track absolutely holds its own, providing a thrilling and engaging surround experience. Gunshots have powerful impact, creating immersive action that extends from the front speakers deep into the sides and rear. Ambient jungle sounds, screams, vehicles, and explosions are delivered with excellent clarity and balance. The low-end gives satisfying thump to violent impacts and gunfire, though it’s not quite as thunderous as the Atmos mix on the 4K disc. Dialogue remains perfectly clean and intelligible even during scenes of intense chaos. The track keeps the viewer fully immersed and does justice to the film’s sudden bursts of violence and dark comedic beats.

Special Features and Extras – 3.5/5

(Same extras as on the 4K set; all extras are housed on this Blu-ray Disc)

  • Crafting The Hunt (HD, 5 min) – Quick overview of the story’s satire and action design.
  • Death Scene Breakdowns (HD, 3 min) – Brief peeks into how the kill scenes were staged.
  • Athena vs. Crystal: Anatomy of a Fight (HD, 3 min) – Dissection of the movie’s intense final battle.
  • Theatrical Trailer (HD, 2 min) – Original marketing trailer.

Short but fun supplements that match the movie’s cheeky spirit. No new feature-length documentary or deleted scenes, which is a bit of a missed opportunity.

Overall – 4.0/5

The Blu-ray presentation of The Hunt is energetic, detailed, and lively, but naturally plays second fiddle to the superior 4K disc in this set. Still, if you’re limited to 1080p viewing, this is a rock-solid option with great picture quality, a punchy surround mix, and some entertaining (if slight) bonus content.

RECOMMENDED — especially for fans of sharp social satire wrapped in bloody, brutal thrills.
