Undisputed (2002) – Blu-ray Disc Review

Kino Lorber Studio Classics | 94 min | R | Release Date: September 24, 2024
Genres: Action, Sports, Crime, Drama

Video Quality – 4 / 5

Kino’s 1080p Blu-ray stems directly from the same new 4K restoration used for the UHD, and it looks terrific in high definition. Detail and texture are strong across the board—razor wire, sweat, and prison grit come through with clarity and realism. Without HDR, blacks appear a touch flatter and contrast slightly less dynamic, but colors are still balanced and natural. Skin tones retain a healthy warmth, and film grain remains authentic without smearing or overcompression. For standard HD displays, this disc is a knockout upgrade over any prior release.

Audio Quality – 4 / 5

Featuring a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, this Blu-ray packs plenty of punch. The boxing sequences hit hard with tight low-end weight and well-spaced crowd ambience. Dialogue is crisp and well-prioritized, never drowned out by the pounding music or crowd noise. Stanley Clarke’s score delivers solid channel separation and smooth midrange energy. Surround activity is moderate but immersive enough to enhance the prison atmosphere.

Special Features – 4 / 5

All extras are carried over from the 4K disc, including:

  • Audio Commentary with Walter Hill and Daniel Kremer
  • Interview with Wesley Snipes
  • Interview with Ving Rhames
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Reversible Cover Art
  • English SDH Subtitles

Compact but satisfying for a modern Kino package, and Hill’s commentary is especially insightful on his minimalist, old-school filmmaking style.

⚖️ Overall – 4 / 5 ⭐

Kino Lorber’s Blu-ray edition of Undisputed is an excellent HD presentation — sharp, cinematic, and full of grit. The transfer benefits from the new 4K restoration, even without HDR, and the DTS-HD audio lands every hit with authority. Whether as part of the 4K combo or on its own, this is the definitive way to experience Walter Hill’s underrated boxing gem.
