The Wiz (1978) – Blu-ray Disc Review
Universal / Criterion Collection | 134 min | G | June 10, 2025
Genres: Musical, Fantasy, Adventure, Family
Video Quality – 4/5
The 1080p Blu-ray, sourced from the same 4K restoration as the UHD disc, holds up well with a filmic and faithful transfer. While not as dynamic as the 4K version, it still boasts strong color reproduction—especially in the vibrant set pieces like the Emerald City and the Munchkinland introduction. Grain is preserved nicely, and detail remains consistent across most of the film, though darker scenes show a bit more softness.
Audio Quality – 4.5/5
Criterion’s DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track offers an immersive and vibrant soundstage. Musical sequences like “Ease on Down the Road” and “Home” shine with clarity and warmth. The mix balances dialogue, score, and ambient effects beautifully, giving the film a fresh sonic presence without overpowering its theatrical roots.
Special Features – 4/5
- Audio commentary by Michael B. Gillespie & Alfred L. Martin Jr.
- Archival interviews with Diana Ross and Sidney Lumet
- Original theatrical trailer
- Booklet featuring an essay by Aisha Harris
⭐ Overall Recommendation – 4.5/5
The Blu-ray edition of The Wiz is a worthy presentation of this colorful, culturally iconic reimagining of Oz. While the 4K disc holds the visual edge, the Blu-ray still benefits from the same restoration and includes all the excellent bonus features. If you’re not 4K-equipped or want a solid HD version for your collection, this Blu-ray is an outstanding choice.
