The 1080p Blu-ray disc, sourced from the same new 4K restoration as the UHD, looks very strong in its own right. Detail is excellent across the board — facial closeups, classroom settings, and special effects makeup all retain good texture and sharpness. Colors are lively but controlled, showcasing 1990s period elements with renewed vibrancy. Blacks are deep and mostly stable, offering impressive shadow detail during nighttime sequences (a major portion of the movie). The grain structure is fine and filmic without looking smeary or digitally scrubbed. This is a clear improvement over older Blu-ray releases (especially the 2012 and 2014 versions), and while it doesn’t quite match the richness and dynamic range of the Dolby Vision 4K presentation, it’s an excellent HD experience for those sticking to standard Blu-ray.
Audio – 4.5/5
- Audio Tracks:
- English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz, 24-bit)
- English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (48kHz, 24-bit)
- Subtitles: English SDH
The 5.1 DTS-HD MA track on Blu-ray mirrors the 4K disc’s excellent performance. Dialogue is consistently clean and well prioritized, even during moments of panic or chaos. Surround activity is strong during football games, alien attack sequences, and crowded school scenes. Soundtrack songs and Marco Beltrami’s moody score are presented cleanly with a good balance between channels. Bass support is solid during action beats and alien creature attacks. Overall, it’s an immersive and detailed mix that complements the visual presentation nicely.
Special Features and Extras – 2.5/5
(Identical to the 4K disc.)
- The Thing from Another Classroom (20:31, HD)
Interview with makeup FX master Greg Nicotero about practical creature work and design. - Too Cool for School (9:00, HD)
Interview with production designer Gary White on creating the film’s creepy school environments.
❗ No theatrical trailer included.
The bonus features are interesting but slim compared to what a collector’s edition could have offered, like cast interviews or deeper retrospectives.
Overall – 3.5/5
Even if you’re only watching the 1080p Blu-ray, The Faculty looks and sounds better than it ever has at home. Shout! Factory’s new remaster gives this late-’90s teen horror/sci-fi hybrid the technical polish it’s always deserved. While the extras are a bit light, the movie remains a nostalgic, if uneven, gem of its era.
RECOMMENDED for genre fans, ’90s kids, and Robert Rodriguez completists.
