Peeping Tom (1960) – Blu-ray Disc Review
Criterion Collection | 101 min | Not Rated | December 12, 2023
Genres: Thriller, Psychological Horror, Drama, Cult Classic

Video Quality – 4.5/5
The Blu-ray, sourced from the same 4K restoration as the UHD disc, delivers a beautifully filmic 1080p presentation. Colors remain bold and haunting—especially reds and deep shadows—while film grain is nicely preserved. Though it lacks the refined highlights and contrast of Dolby Vision, this HD version still captures the chilling elegance of Michael Powell’s cinematography with impressive depth and clarity.

Audio Quality – 4/5
The uncompressed mono track offers clear, well-balanced dialogue and atmospheric sound design. Carl Boehm’s unnerving performance comes through cleanly, and the minimalistic score maintains its eerie presence. While not immersive, the mono mix remains faithful to the original theatrical experience.

Special Features – 4.5/5

  • Audio commentary by Ian Christie
  • A Very British Psycho documentary (1997)
  • Interview with Thelma Schoonmaker
  • Archival interview excerpts with Michael Powell
  • Essay by film critic Megan Abbott (in included booklet)

Overall Recommendation – 4.5/5
Criterion’s Blu-ray edition of Peeping Tom is an excellent presentation of a once-maligned masterpiece. While the 4K disc offers the definitive visual experience, the Blu-ray still benefits from the meticulous restoration and includes all the same valuable extras. A standout release for classic horror fans and collectors alike.
