Æon Flux (2005) – Blu-ray Disc Review

Paramount | 93 min | PG-13 | 2024 Blu-ray from 4K master
Genres: Sci-Fi, Action, Cyberpunk

Video Quality — 3.5 / 5

This Blu-ray uses the same new 4K restoration as the UHD, down-converted to 1080p SDR. The result is cleaner and more stable than the old Blu-ray:

  • Sharper detail than any prior HD release
  • Grain handled better with no smearing or DNR
  • Color timing preserved without the HDR “pop”
  • Shadows slightly flatter vs the UHD
  • Occasional softness inherent to the digital source carries over

A definite upgrade from the original Blu-ray, but visually not in the same league as the HDR UHD.

Audio Quality — 4 / 5

Identical DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix as the 4K disc. Still very solid:

  • Dialogue strong and centered
  • Surrounds used actively in futuristic action scenes
  • Synth score spreads wide without distortion
  • Sub-bass hits with controlled punch

For a Blu-ray, this is a muscular, cinematic 5.1 track.

Special Features — 2.5 / 5

Same extras as the 4K disc (archival featurettes):

  • Production & Costume Featurettes
  • VFX / Concept Art materials
  • Trailer
  • English SDH subtitles

No new materials exclusive to this edition.

⚖️ Overall — 3.5 / 5 ⭐

As a standard HD option, this Blu-ray is a solid, clean upgrade over legacy editions. It retains the improved master and delivers a strong 5.1 mix, but the UHD remains the definitive presentation due to HDR and higher detail retention. A worthwhile disc if you are collecting both formats or not yet using 4K displays.
